The common physical complications of brain injuries

On Behalf of | Sep 21, 2022 | Accidents & Incidents

Illinois residents who get into serious accidents could be left with traumatic brain injuries. There are certain physical complications that are common with this type of injury.

Infections

Sometimes, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to an infection. This is common when the injury results from an object penetrating the skull and brain. Meningitis can occur and spread to the rest of the nervous system if it’s not promptly treated. Sepsis can also occur and lead to organ damage that could be fatal without timely medical intervention.

Vertigo

Some people who suffer TBIs experience vertigo, which causes dizziness. Victims might have a sense of the room spinning around them and become disoriented. Vertigo also often worsens when you’re lying down and can cause nausea and vomiting.

Seizures

Many people who sustain TBIs have seizures. Seizures can develop early in the injury or many years later. This is caused by trauma to certain areas of the brain.

Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common physical complications of TBIs. They can come at any point after suffering the injury and can come and go or remain constant for several months at a time. Sometimes, TBI-related headaches can be debilitating like migraines.

Fluid buildup on the brain

Fluid on the brain sometimes occurs in individuals who have incurred a TBI. This can cause added pressure and swelling in the brain, which often requires medical intervention to relieve.

Deep vein thrombosis

In some individuals with TBIs, it’s possible to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that could travel to other areas of the body and lead to pulmonary embolism. This is a life-threatening complication that must be medically addressed immediately.

TBIs can cause problems in your daily life. Regular medical care is necessary if you have this type of injury.
