A closer look at the symptoms of traumatic brain injuries

On Behalf of Nolan Law Group | Oct 19, 2022 | Accidents & Incidents

If you or someone you know experienced a TBI in Illinois, it’s understandable to wonder about this condition’s symptoms. As it turns out, the symptoms of traumatic brain injuries can vary. It’s helpful to understand the differences between the two main categories of TBI symptoms.

Mild TBI symptoms

Sometimes, a traumatic brain injury won’t cause severe damage. However, even mild TBI symptoms aren’t things to ignore. After experiencing a mild traumatic brain injury, you might experience trouble sleeping or sudden changes in your overall mood. It’s also common for survivors of mild traumatic brain injuries to experience an odd taste in their mouths that they can’t explain.

Other common symptoms of a mild TBI include:

  • Heightened sensitivity to bright lights or loud noises
  • Nausea
  • Mild dizziness
  • Feeling confused

Severe symptoms of a traumatic brain injury

In certain situations, the human brain undergoes severe trauma. As you can imagine, more severe trauma to the brain often causes more severe symptoms. If you experience severe TBI symptoms, it’s best to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Severe traumatic brain injuries can cause you to experience numbness that sometimes travels through your arms, legs or both. It’s also not uncommon for severe TBIs to cause someone to go in and out of consciousness.

Other symptoms of severe TBIs:

  • Trouble waking up
  • Difficulty speaking or slurred speech
  • Frequent nausea and vomiting
  • Severe headaches
  • Dilated pupils, sometimes accompanied by vision loss

Considering the complexity of traumatic brain injuries, you shouldn’t want to seek medical treatment for this ailment. A medical professional can evaluate if you’re dealing with a TBI and its severity. Then, this professional can begin forming the proper treatment plan.
