Factors that can delay diagnosis

On Behalf of Nolan Law Group | Oct 15, 2024 | Accidents & Incidents

Before effective medical treatment can occur, an accurate diagnosis needs to be made. Not only should a diagnosis be accurate, but it should happen as efficiently as possible.

A delayed diagnosis means delayed treatment. In some cases, this can be fatal. What are some common factors that can delay diagnosis?

Improper testing

There are several steps to making a diagnosis. Usually, the process begins with a consultation where the doctor physically examines the patient. They can then go on to order further testing if necessary. Some medical conditions can only be picked up by very specific testing. This is why it is so important that doctors are thorough during initial examinations so that the appropriate tests can be carried out. Failure to do so can result in delayed diagnosis.

Doctor complacency

Doctors acquire a lot of knowledge through training and practice. Nonetheless, there is always something to learn. Doctors should not be complacent as every patient and their needs are different. Complacency may occur when a doctor doesn’t bother to listen properly to the patient. It is easy to miss something vital when this happens.

Failure to refer

Hospitals have specific departments for a reason. In an initial consultation, the doctor must recognize whether or not the patient may have a condition that requires another doctor’s professional opinion. For example, if the doctor suspects that the patient may have cancer, then the patient should be referred to the appropriate oncologist. Not doing this could result in a delayed diagnosis and significant harm to the patient.

If you suffered harm due to a delayed diagnosis, then this could be medical malpractice. Seeking legal guidance will give you an idea of whether or not you may be entitled to financial compensation.
